(NOTE: This is a very DIFFERENT DESIGN from existing DARRIEUS, SAVONIUS, GORLOV, UGRINSKY or GYROMILL type VAWT wind turbines. This is the World's first aerodynamically viable Revolving-Wing Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, which uses only a SINGLE straight, vertical AIRFOIL to generate high velocity vertical rotation from wind. It is designed to break new ground in Vertical Axis Wind Turbine COST and ENERGY GENERATION EFFICIENCY.)
ALTERNATIVE MORE "TECHY" DESCRIPTION:
These videos show a scale model of an INNOVATIVE 3RD GENERATION Revolving-Wing Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Rotor being tested in turbulent airflow created by a 50 Watt fan. A Revolving-Wing VAWT Turbine uses 1 straight, carefully shaped, vertically standing or hanging WING to generate 360 degree mechanical rotation from wind. The 3D printed PLA model in this video is suspended from a short length of string to demonstrate its positional stability while hanging unsupported in medium-fast airflow. This new HIGH RPM, HIGH TORQUE, LOW COST VAWT design can be used to generate electricity in 2 different ways. As a high speed VAWT turbine revolving around a METAL SHAFT, mounted on a TOWER or on the roof or SIDE WALL of a structure. Or as a completely new HANGING, SHAFTLESS VAWT which is hung freely into wind using a STEEL WIRE and can be suspended from tall structures like BRIDGES or MOTORWAY VIADUCTS. Of course small versions of this new type of turbine can also be mounted on top of or hung from LOWER STRUCTURES like STREET LAMPS, ROOFS, BALCONIES or even TREE BRANCHES. This high speed VAWT is SELF-STARTING and can turn in BOTH CLOCKWISE AND COUNTERCLOCKWISE directions equally well. It is designed to handle WIND BLOWING UPWARD and TURBULENT WIND well, making it suitable for BUILT environments like CITIES. The Rotor model shown is printed from 100% solid White PLA material and is quite heavy.
PHYSICS EXPLAINED: Pioneered using PHYSICAL MODELS and COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS, the COMPLETELY NEW Category of Revolving-Wing VAWT Turbines use a SINGLE straight, expertly shaped, non-helical AIRFOIL to translate AERODYNAMIC LIFT-FORCE into a fast, sustained 360 DEGREE ROTATION around a vertical SHAFT which runs through the center-line of the Wing. Instead of a fast moving Blade CUTTING rapidly through INCOMING WIND at an angle as is the case in most VAWT Turbine designs, limiting the efficiency of the turbine, this new Revolving Wing VAWT Rotor essentially FLIPS OVER RAPIDLY IN-PLACE IN WIND using aerodynamic lift-force, without moving horizontally or vertically. This not only translates into VERY DIFFERENT AIRFLOW THROUGH THE HIGH SPEED ROTOR, but also allows Revolving Wing VAWTS to EJECT ENERGY-DEPLETED WIND TO THE SIDES and create a LESS TURBULENT WAKE from older HAWT and VAWT Wind Turbines. An AERODYNAMICALLY STABLE Revolving Wing VAWT Rotor behaves like a FLYWHEEL mechanically, and DOES NOT HAVE STRONG HORIZONTAL FORCES ACTING ON THE SHAFT it revolves around, resulting in REDUCED STRESS on the MECHANICAL COMPONENTS of the Wind Turbine and thus LOWER LONG-TERM WEAR and MAINTENANCE COST.
A MAJOR ADVANTAGE of this completely new VAWT DESIGN is that Wind Turbines of this type can be PLACED MUCH MORE CLOSELY TOGETHER than is typically possible with conventional Wind Turbines. This new Revolving Wing VAWT produces A VERY DIFFERENT WAKE than is seen in existing HAWT and VAWT Turbines and is less affected by turbulent flow created by a neighboring Turbine. It is also possible to place MORE Turbines of this new VAWT type together by STAGGERING THE HEIGHT of the installed units in a STAIRSTEP fashion or by STACKING MULTIPLE UNITS VERTICALLY. In OFFSHORE WIND FARMS, especially FLOATING offshore facilities where Wind Turbines are placed on FLOATING PONTOONS or BUOYS, this new Vertical Axis Wind Turbine has LESS TILTING FORCE acting on it than a conventional wind turbine, allowing it to float on water with LESS uncontrolled SWAYING/TILTING or propensity to DRIFT at sea. This is due to this new Rotor Design's NATURAL PROPENSITY TO SPIN-IN-PLACE WITH GREAT FLYWHEEL-LIKE STABILITY.
A POWERFUL ability of this innovative new VAWT Turbine is that it is SUPREMELY VERTICALLY STACKABLE. For example 3 SMALL and CHEAP TO MANUFACTURE Rotors may be placed ON TOP OF EACH OTHER on 1 TALL VERTICAL SHAFT, creating a 3X MORE ENERGY GENERATING Wind Turbine WITHOUT requiring a LARGER AND MORE EXPENSIVE Rotor to be manufactured. In a HANGING configuration, 5 SMALL Rotors may be placed on the SAME STEEL WIRE, or configured as a LARGER SAIL made up of MULTIPLE PARALLEL VERTICAL WIRES. This can be useful for use in ELECTRICAL SHIPS, EV RECHARGING STATIONS or in MOUNTAINTOP WINDPOWER. It is also possible to make an ELECTRICITY GENERATING SAIL for ELECTRICAL SHIPS by mounting MULTIPLE Rotors on top of each other HORIZONTALLY on THE SHIP'S MASTS. One can also span a LONG WIRE horizontally between VERTICAL POLES and HANG MANY UNITS FROM THE WIRE.
3RD ALTERNATIVE DESCRIPTION
This video shows a scale model of a patented 3rd generation revolving-wing vertical axis wind turbine rotor being tested in very uneven and turbulent airflow created by a 50 watt fan. The rotor model is being suspended from an ordinary piece of string in this video. This new type of high rpm, high torque, high energy output, low noise turbine can be used to generate electrical energy in 2 different ways. As a conventional vawt turbine revolving around a shaft, mounted on a tower or on the roof or side wall of a building for example. Or as a hanging, shaftless vawt turbine which is suspended from a steel wire and can be hung under tall structures like a bridge or a motorway viaduct. Of course smaller versions of this turbine can also be mounted to or hung from lower structures like a street lamp, a balcony or even a tree branch. The design is self starting and can turn in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions. It is designed to handle wind blowing upward and turbulent wind well, making it suitable for energy generation in built environments like building rooftops in an inner city. The rotor shown in this video is a 3d printed scale model printed from white pla material.
Engineering explained: the innovative new category of revolving-wing wind turbines use a single wing or airfoil to translate aerodynamic lift force efficiently into a sustained and rapid 360 degree rotation around one rotation axis. Instead of a moving airfoil continuously cutting rapidly through oncoming wind as is the case in most vawt designs, limiting the efficiency of the turbine, a revolving wing wind rotor essentially flips over rapidly in place in wind using aerodynamic lift force and does not move through it. This not only translates into very different mechanical behavior and airflow around the rotor, but also allows revolving wing vawts to eject energy-depleted wind to the sides and create a very different wake from existing horizontal axis and vertical axis wind turbines. An aerodynamically stable revolving wing vawt rotor design creates high energy output, low vibration, low noise and does not have strong pull or push forces acting horizontally on the central shaft it revolves around, resulting in reduced wear on the mechanical components of the wind turbine and thus lower maintenance costs.
Another major advantage of this design is that wind turbines of this type can be placed much more closely together than is typically possible with horizontal axis wind turbines. This turbine produces a different wake than is seen in existing hawt or vawt turbines and is less affected by turbulent flow created by a neighboring turbine of the same type. It is thus possible to install more units of this type in a given area than would be possible with existing designs, especially compared to horizontal axis wind turbines. It is also possible to place more turbines of this type together by staggering the height of the installed units.
In energy generating offshore windfarms, especially floating offshore facilities where wind turbines are placed on floating pontoons, buoys and/or moored to the sea floor, this design has far less tilting force acting on it than a horizontal axis wind turbine, allowing it to float on water with far less undesired swaying or tilting or propensity to drift. This is due to the rotor design's natural propensity to spin in place with great stability rather than trying to move in any direction the wind pushes in.
This revolving wing design may in the future also be adapted for use as a water turbine which can generate electricity from flowing water currents such as in a river, or from moving tides and sea waves. How well this design will perform in water has not been sufficiently explored yet as the prime focus of the design effort at present is on producing clean energy efficiently from blowing wind.
To prevent birds or other flying animals from being harmed by this rotor, the rotor, which has a cylindrical rotation envelope, can be surrounded with a thin cylindrically shaped safety netting. This prevents flying animals from entering into the turning area and improves the visibility of the vawt turbine so animals can see it more clearly.
The aim of this green energy innovation is to protect the environment, reduce carbon emissions and air pollution and make it more economically feasible for the world to achieve net zero emissions. With more efficient and differently sized vawt windturbines which are suitable for use in areas with turbulent windflow, like cities and wooded areas, this aim becomes one step closer to becoming reality.
